“The Ricot lake” hide

Commune de Saint-Michel-en-Brenne

The first public hide to be erected on the Reserve, it gives a panoramic view of the Ricot lake and its extensive reedbed.

The elevated position of the hide makes it possible to look into the heart of the reserve to observe the behaviour of reedbed species in the spring; recent redevelopments also allow public (including the less mobile) to access the lower part of the hide, and have a view over the lake.

The large reedbed that surrounds the Ricot lake has long been known for the species that inhabit it during the breeding season. Marsh Harrier, Reed Warbler and Water Rail occur, while both Little and Great Crested Grebes build their nests in the vegetation. The tree trunk in front of the reedbed is a preferred perch of Kingfisher, Night Heron and European Pond Tortoise.

The wide expanse of open water is particularly attractive to different species of duck during the winter. Red Deer are quite often seen in the morning or evening.

The light is most favourable in the morning.
